ENG: Yeah, Mum, I know, I know. If it hadn't been for my generation dropping the ball, we'd have Rosie the Riveter on children's TV, rather than Bob the Builder.
Ma: Exactly!

ENG, slyly: Well, at least it isn't Bob the Bilderberger.

*Fun facts that mostly get lost in the downsizing:
— Mum doesn't wear lipstick.
— Mum's eyes are blue; Nuëlle's are green.
— Mum doesn't pluck her eyebrows; Nuëlle hasn't been able to quit yet.
— Mum has a stronger jaw, a different nose, larger breasts. Nuëlle looks almost petite — no, never petite, but svelte, almost fragile in comparison. Nuëlle has passed from girl-land into womanhood, but mum's been there much longer and beats her with experience.
— Mum doesn't have a butch haircut, but she'll be damned if she spends half her day messing with her hair like Nuëlle must.

*Ha, this works on even more levels than I realized.

The core pun is Builder / Bilderberg, as in this bit I wrote for a friend, «Bob the Builder is a character from children's television, he's, well, a builder, all sorts of construction. Rosie the Riveter is an American icon, when all the men went to war and the women had to 'man' the factories, well, she was the symbol of those. And the Bilderbergers are a meeting of 'world leaders' that there's a lot of conspiracy theories about. So the pun works off that, Mum's this oldschool feminist and she's like, 'We fought hard, your generation just benefits from all we achieved, but you're not actually DOING anything'. Like, if they'd kept up the good work, it wouldn't be Bob the Builder doing the construction on children's TV, it'd be Rosie the Riveter doing the construction work. And Nu doesn't want to hear the scolding, so she's making fun of it saying, hey, it may be Bob the Builder, that's not as good as it could be (like having Rosie instead), but at least it's not as bad as having Bob the Bilder-berger (silly pun there).»

Now the funny bit is that Bob's line is, "Can we fix it? — Yes, we can!" ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3IWKhYQarJU ). On one hand, that's pretty much Barack Obama's line ("Yes, we can!"), of course. On the other, it's also, somewhat wrongly, associated with Rosie ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosie_the_Riveter#Popular_images ): "We can do it!"

So yeah, "Rosie instead of Bob" would have worked on several levels. :)

*sigh I still love the punchline, I think it's quite nice -- and completely useless, because it's so obscure that maybe two or three readers get it.
What makes it a complete waste though is the fact that I never set it up properly -- the fact that they're discussing feminism through the generations should be obvious from panel one, rather than just implied. :( Took me this long to notice it too, because I knew what it was about!!
